As far as I have observed, Opium has apparently no injurious effect morally & socially on its consumers.
4 In this Colony, Opium is consumed by the Chinese chiefly by smoking, & although I have known people eating the drug, I am not able to distinguish between the effects of each form.
5 The great majority are moderate consumers. During my 20 years residence in this Colony, I have not come across any "Opium slave."
6 Certainly, it is incorrect to say there is no moderation in the consumption of Opium. In my office, the "Clunie boys" had been in the habit of smoking Opium for 16/18 years, & do not seem any the worse for it.
He is a store keeper then about 5 years of age but apparently in good health.
